While fighting continued around the West Woods, Union attacks struck the Confederate center along an ordinary sunken farm road. Find the line marked “Sunken Lane.” (Near center) Here troops of D.H. Hill’s division, especially the brigades of Robert Rodes and George B. Anderson, used the road’s banks as cover. Some strengthened the position with fence rails. Union soldiers approaching over the rising ground faced a deadly problem: to reach the road, they had to expose themselves to defenders sheltered below them. Rodes described firing on one advancing line at roughly 80 yards. Follow the blue arrows from the Roulette farm. William French’s division advanced against this position, with brigades commanded by Max Weber, Dwight Morris, and Nathan Kimball. Repeated attacks and exchanges of fire failed to carry the lane. Many of French’s soldiers were new to combat. Veterans and recruits alike endured a punishing fight, advancing through fields and over fences, then firing from the ridges facing the road. French later reported 1,817 men killed, wounded, or missing in his division. Israel Richardson’s division then added pressure on French’s left, toward the eastern end of the Confederate position. Thomas Francis Meagher’s Irish Brigade went forward, followed into the struggle by troops under John Caldwell and John Brooke. The red arrows coming up from the Piper farm show Confederate efforts to reinforce the center. Richard H. Anderson’s division entered the fighting, but its arrival could not secure the position. Eventually, Union soldiers gained an angle from which they could fire along the road. Francis Barlow, commanding the 61st and 64th New York, described advancing into a position that allowed his men to strike the defenders in the flank. He reported taking more than 300 prisoners. The lane’s banks offered little protection against bullets coming down its length. Confusion also accelerated the collapse. According to Rodes, an order to pull back one wing of the 6th Alabama became a withdrawal of the regiment, then spread to neighboring troops. Under sustained pressure, the Confederate line gave way. Union troops crossed the road and pushed toward the Piper farm, but the breakthrough did not become a decisive advance into Sharpsburg. Confederate artillery and renewed resistance helped check the advance. Richardson was mortally wounded near the close of the fighting, and his exhausted division eventually drew back to the high ground north of the lane.
