@centralcoastarchives: I always assumed baby camels were just tiny versions of adult camels. Turns out they’re not. They’re actually born without those big humps everyone associates with camels. The humps develop as they grow and start storing fat, which helps them survive long periods without food in the desert. They’re also surprisingly big from day one. A newborn camel can weigh over 80 pounds, and within just a few hours it’s already standing, walking, and trying to keep up with its mom. And somehow they’re ridiculously fluffy. That thick baby coat helps keep them warm during cold desert nights before they grow into the shorter coat adults have. Honestly, if someone showed me a picture of one without any context, I don’t think I’d even guess it was a camel.
