These type of videos are ridiculous. Both are correct. That's the beauty of math there's not just on way to solve a problem. Trying to state that one way is superior is not true. And simply tries to state that the way someone else learned is the incorrect way and useless. Going through the longer way gives more opportunities for substitutions of variables and other known equations. Good for standardized testing, yes. Not for figuring out a complex problem that no one has even attempted before you..

As someone who teaches math, but is older and learned it as you have here โold mathโ your old math does not always work out well if itโs not easily divided. Itโs a valid math move, but not one that I would use if I was going to end up with a fraction or a decimal. So that is not old math. Thatโs just a different place to start.

ok, so... not popular here.... back in my day they would actually show different ways to solve these. they leaned heavy common core but really good teachers, like I had, showed different methods because not all brains thought the same.

This isnโt a difference in common core and old math. Both of these methods would be taught in old math and common core. You just picked the simplest method and labeled that old math.

But the real question is telling kids why abs when they will use this on there day to day in the world. Are we teaching this to because it was taught to us? Maybe more life skills?
