A story is often only as good as its antagonist, and Muzan Kibutsuji is an absolute disaster of a villain. Despite being alive for a millennium, Muzan possesses the tactical intellect of a petulant child. Instead of operating as a terrifying, omnipresent threat or a mastermind who evaded a corps for 1,000 years, he acts as a cowardly recluse who relies entirely on meat-shield subordinates. He actively dismantles his own forces out of temper tantrums and possesses a motivation rooted in finding a specific flower simply because he dislikes the sunlight. The ultimate tragedy of *Demon Slayer* is that its immense popularity has successfully tricked an entire generation of viewers into conflating high-budget animation with high-quality writing. Take away ufotable’s breathtaking water-breathing effects, their seamless digital cinematography, and their dynamic camera work, and you are left with a script that reads like it was generated by an AI instructed to write the most baseline, risk-averse shonen manga possible. The flashy visuals act as a cheap magician's trick, distracting the audience from the fact that the characters are hollow, the plot is a relic of twenty years ago, and the emotional beats are utterly unearned. Ultimately, *Demon Slayer* is a triumph of marketing and studio production, but an absolute failure of narrative art. It is a loud, shallow spectacle that demands nothing from its audience and offers nothing of substance in return. It really summarizes how Demon Slayer is the worst piece of fiction ever.
