So many actors who were doing 8 shows a week 20-30 years ago aren’t working onstage anymore. Vocal injuries, dance injuries, allergic reactions to various materials- these have all put talented people out of work and were exasperated by the demand

I'm 51, not a performer, so I can't really speak to whether it is harder now. It probably is. But I promise you that when the folks were doing it in the 80s and 90s, they HATED it. They would have changed it if they could, but there were not voices saying we could. We got fired for pushing back. So when we got a little power, we started saying it was not ok, which has given younger people more power to push back. And now some folks refuse to remember what they experienced when they were in the trenches, because change is hard. Stay strong and keep pushing back!

I personally think that having multiple casts working concurrently, perhaps switching off days, would be better for creating a healthy work/life balance... but I'm not trynna have tomatoes thrown at me.

Also it’s not just Broadway. Regional and touring shows as well have very similar schedules as well. I’ve done both and having only one day off when you’re not in your home town can be very hard. And on tour usually your only day off is your travel day(unless you’re doing a sit down somewhere where you’re not moving every week) so you have even less time and energy to rest and get things done. It’s crew too. It’s Stage management. It’s front of house. I think everyone one would benefit even from one less show a week to start. 6 shows would be a sweet spot. Give everyone a chance to do what they love and be properly supported. Every one would benefit from a physically and mentally healthy and thrive cast and crew.

I’m a lyricist - we musical theatre writers definitely feel pressure from producers to whittle cast (and band) size down as much as possible, since people are the most expensive ongoing costs of a show.

Was having the discussion too that I could do Oliver (Nancy) day after day after day - but couldn’t do Heathers (Duke) more than the three weekends we did. It was absolutely vocally INSANE to maintain.

I get what you’re saying but also I reject the idea that Broadway now is harder than it was in the 80’s seeing how triple threats started in 1975 with A Chorus Line.

I’m trying to sniff out the path to a better place. I look at Broadway’s revenue report for the last six weeks and the shows that are closing, or trending towards closing. I think six shows a week instead of eight just accelerates the decline. I don’t know if the shows can support a 30+ percent price increase. Does Broadway just need to have half the number of shows? Did the economics not work in Manhattan? I don’t know, I want to know.
