@anna..papalia: 🤔When you're considering leaving your job, whether it's for a better salary, career growth, or a more positive work environment, the decision to resign is often met with a counteroffer from your current employer. At first, the counteroffer can feel like validation—a sign that your employer values you enough to fight to keep you. But while the immediate allure of a higher paycheck or new promises might seem appealing, the statistics and underlying issues paint a much different picture. 👇🏼Here are 7 reasons why you should never accept a counteroffer: 1️⃣ The Core Issues Don’t Change Why were you looking for a new job in the first place? Perhaps it was due to dissatisfaction with management, lack of career growth, or a toxic work environment. Accepting a counteroffer might increase your salary, but it won’t address the root of the problem. If you were unhappy enough to explore other opportunities, a quick fix won’t resolve the underlying issues. It’s important to recognize why a counteroffer is being made in the first place. In most cases, it’s not because the company suddenly realized your worth—it’s because your resignation creates an immediate problem for them. They may face project delays, hiring costs, or disruptions to workflow if you leave. A counteroffer is often more about solving their problem than acknowledging your value as an employee. 50-80% of companies see counteroffers as temporary fixes – Many employers offer counteroffers to retain talent in the short term while working on a longer-term replacement. 2️⃣ Damage to Trust Once you’ve informed your employer of your intent to leave, the dynamic changes. Accepting a counteroffer often leads to an erosion of trust. Your employer may begin to question your loyalty, seeing you as someone willing to leave for the right price. Once you've expressed a desire to leave, even if you stay, your employer might view you as a "flight risk." This means that any future signs of dissatisfaction—whether it's requesting time off or voicing concerns—could be interpreted as you preparing to leave again. This paranoia can make your relationship with your employer tense and uncomfortable. 3️⃣ Your Employer Is Buying Time Many companies offer counteroffers not because they want to keep you long-term, but because they need time to find a suitable replacement. In many cases, employees who accept counteroffers are kept on just long enough for the employer to secure a new hire, after which they may be let go or gradually pushed aside. Statistics show that 50-80% of companies view counteroffers as temporary solutions. 4️⃣ The Money Isn’t Enough A salary increase might be part of the counteroffer, but money alone is rarely the reason people consider leaving a job. Career satisfaction involves more than a paycheck—it’s about fulfillment, work-life balance, and future opportunities. If those non-monetary factors aren’t addressed, the extra money won’t make a difference in the long run. 5️⃣ You’ll Be Overlooked for Future Opportunities Once you’ve demonstrated that you’re willing to leave for a better offer, your employer may question your commitment to the organization. As a result, when it comes time for promotions, raises, or special projects, your name might not be at the top of the list. Managers might prefer to invest in employees who haven’t previously considered jumping ship, viewing them as more dependable. 6️⃣ The Statistics Are Against You Statistics on the tenure of people who accept counteroffers vary, but generally indicate that accepting a counteroffer often leads to shorter tenure and potential dissatisfaction. Some key points include: 80% of those who accept counteroffers leave within 6 months 7️⃣ It’s Time for a Fresh Start Once you’ve made the decision to leave, it’s usually best to follow through. #counteroffer #work #careeradvice #jobsearchtips

they aren't giving you a raise, they are buying time to replace you. This is always a trap.

never accept the counter. I did that once while I was still young and stupid. boss gave me the raise, I declined the other position, within 3 weeks I was fired. Leaving the bosses office, she said "only loyal people work here, you crossed the wrong woman" luckily, I was able to find even better than both and been when this company for 15 years.

But what if I was given a promotion but pending budget discussion before I brought the external offer topic.Technically, is it not supposed to be called counter offer?

So it has to come to that point to even consider the offer? If I wasn’t leaving that offer wouldn’t exist.

If they counter offered, that means they’ve been underpaying me for what I’ve been worth for who knows how long. I’m sorry but by then, it’s too late.

I am an exception. I genuinely enjoyed working at my company, but I was considering an offer from another company because it came with a higher salary. I accepted my employer’s counteroffer and decided to stay. I then spent several more productive years there without any issues. In the end, it turned out to be a good decision, as the company I had planned to join eventually went bankrupt.

The better question is why weren’t you making what they now value you at? Most people don’t leave for $$$$, they leave for better working conditions.

I accepted a counter-offer 3 years ago. I’m now job-searching after they tried to put the person I replaced on maternity leave 6 years ago back in her old position after she told my bosses she wanted to come back. I was a replacement plan. Just took longer to be replaced from their temporary solution and didn’t know it until it was too late.

Statistically speaking most employees end up leaving within 6-12 months after accepting the counter…. At the end of the day, it’s not just about the money.
