For three decades, Pauline Hanson has built a career deciding who belongs in the Australian story and who doesn’t. Sometimes it’s First Nations Australians. Sometimes it’s migrants. Sometimes it’s Muslims, refugees, or multicultural communities. Sometimes it’s LGBTQIA+ Australians, transgender kids, teachers, climate scientists or the ABC. The names change. The pattern doesn’t. The easiest way to build an “us” has always been to first create a “them.” I want politicians who spend less time drawing lines between Australians and more time building bridges between them. Because a country isn’t made stronger by shrinking the circle of belonging. It’s made stronger every time we refuse to let someone be pushed outside it.
