महाप्रस्थान) की कथा से है, तो वह महाभारत के महाप्रस्थानिक पर्व और स्वर्गारोहण पर्व में आती है। * महाप्रस्थानिक पर्व (पर्व 17) – युधिष्ठिर, भीम, अर्जुन, नकुल, सहदेव और द्रौपदी हिमालय की ओर अंतिम यात्रा पर निकलते हैं। रास्ते में एक-एक करके द्रौपदी और चारों भाई गिर जाते हैं। अंत में केवल युधिष्ठिर और उनके साथ चल रहा एक कुत्ता रह जाते हैं। * स्वर्गारोहण पर्व (पर्व 18) – इंद्र का रथ आता है। युधिष्ठिर कुत्ते को छोड़े बिना स्वर्ग जाने से मना कर देते हैं। तब पता चलता है कि वह कुत्ता वास्तव में धर्मदेव (यम) थे, जो उनकी परीक्षा ले रहे थे। इसके बाद युधिष्ठिर स्वर्ग पहुँचते हैं। हिंदू परंपरा में कुत्ते को धर्मराज (यमराज) का दूत और रक्षक माना गया है। इसलिए उसके प्रति सम्मान प्रकट किया जाता है।

Simple the different animals that are worshiped during Diwali/Tihar are basically those animals that are helping during the farming and are venerated for the successful harvest. Dog, crow, cow all help in someway in farming. So it’s not actual worship but more about giving respect to those animals. But again, since those things are not documented, Hindus themselves have forgotten the meaning of them.

Can be explained in many ways, but Tihar is actually celebrated to appreciate things that add beuty to our life. 1.Crows (birds) kaag tihar 2. kukur Tihar ( dogs cats and other pets) 3. Gai tihar. (cows and food storage) 4. Govardhan (mountains, rivers, bull donkey and horses. ) and also your own back- mhaa puja. 5. bhai tika. (brothers and sister)
