Before achieving absolute power as the dictator of Germany, Adolf Hitler’s early life was defined by failure, rejection, and radicalization. Born in Austria in 1889, his greatest initial ambition was to become a famous fine artist. In 1907, Hitler moved to Vienna to pursue this dream but was rejected twice by the Academy of Fine Arts. The academy stated he lacked talent for painting and suggested he study architecture instead. Without a steady income, he fell into deep poverty, living in homeless shelters and surviving by selling hand-copied postcards and watercolors of local landmarks. It was during this period of displacement in Vienna that he first absorbed aggressive anti-Semitic and radical nationalist ideologies. When World War I broke out in 1914, Hitler volunteered for the German army. He served as a frontline dispatch runner, was wounded, and received military decorations. The German defeat in 1918 deeply traumatized him, fueling a belief in the "stab-in-the-back" myth, which blamed Jews and communists for the nation's collapse. He soon entered politics, taking control of a small extremist group that became the Nazi Party (NSDAP). Following a failed coup attempt in 1923 (the Beer Hall Putsch), he served nine months in prison. He then shifted tactics, using democratic elections and exploiting the economic devastation of the 1929 Great Depression to gain mass appeal. In January 1933, Hitler was appointed Chancellor, and by August 1934, he dismantled the republic to become the undisputed Führer. His Artistic and Literary WorksHitler's creative and ideological output is divided into his early days as a struggling painter and his later manifestos.Watercolors and Paintings (1900s–1910s): During his youth, Hitler produced hundreds of artworks to earn a living. Modern art critics generally view his style as technically accurate regarding architecture, but completely lacking in original emotion or soul. His paintings focused almost entirely on public buildings, churches, and urban landscapes. Notably, human figures are almost entirely absent from his work; when they do appear, they are tiny, distant, and poorly executed, showing his lack of interest in humanity. Some of his known pieces include detailed depictions of The Vienna State Opera and the Neuschwanstein Castle.Mein Kampf (My Struggle - 1925): Written mostly while imprisoned after his failed coup, this book combines heavily distorted autobiographical elements with the core tenets of Nazi ideology. It outlines his obsession with "Aryan racial purity," absolute hatred of Jewish people, opposition to communism, and the planned territorial expansion into Eastern Europe (known as Lebensraum or "living space").Zweites Buch (Second Book - 1928): A sequel to Mein Kampf that focused strictly on foreign policy and his vision of a future global conflict for supremacy. It was never published during his lifetime due to the poor initial sales of his first book. #military #art #germany #ww2 #History
