Atiku garnered only 1,693,485 votes from the South-East which is less than Goodluck Jonathan's 2,464,906 votes from the same region in 2015. This indicates significant opposition to the Atiku/Obi ticket in the South-East. So, what influence did Peter Obi have in the 2019 election? In 2018, it was suggested that a governor should be Atiku’s running mate, but he insisted on his choice. In 2022, the same suggestion was made if Atiku secured the PDP presidential ticket, which Peter Obi knew before defecting to the Labour Party. After primaries, the party listed four serving governors- Obaseki, Udom Emmanuel, and others- for Atiku to choose from, ultimately selecting Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa, despite rumors that Nyesom Wike was the preferred vice presidential candidate. After the election, Atiku explained in a press conference that nothing prevented him from choosing Peter Obi as his running mate. He said Obi was impatient and afraid of the governors, which led to his departure from the PDP and move to the Labour Party. In 2025, Peter Obi stated that only a united opposition could defeat Bola Tinubu, agreeing to the African Democratic Congress's terms. During the campaign in Abuja, Obi told supporters he would be on the ballot, and when rumors spread that Kwankwaso might join ADC, he aligned himself with the former Kano governor and left the ADC.
