You start with a flat shape, then push it back into space while keeping every edge connected and aligned. It sounds simple, but it trains something incredibly important: your ability to visualize forms in three dimensions. The more you practice extrusions, the easier it becomes to keep objects lined up in space. Instead of guessing where the back edge should go, you begin to feel it intuitively. That’s why this exercise transfers to so many different subjects. Buildings, vehicles, furniture, letters, and everyday objects all become easier to construct because you’re thinking in volume instead of outlines. Perspective isn’t just about vanishing points. It’s about understanding how forms occupy space, and shape extrusions are one of the best ways to train that instinct.
