@greglangstaff: This is how we envision them acting, but in reality gaps in the 2020s are the norm. Employers are typically very understanding, especially if it’s just one gap and not a pattern. #career #jobsearch #hiring

I had a company ask about the gap in employment from March 2020 until the following March...

Yes. Now do the one where these candidates don’t have gaps but the 12 year candidate would have to be paid more so they don’t choose them

He forgot that the two year person would cost maybe half of what the 12 year person would be but other than that spot on

i was once told my 30 years of experience wasn't good enough and needed a bachelor's degree. i asked a bachelor's in what? they said doesn't matter. i said if it was French literature that would count? yep. it was for an operations management position. they'd take a French literature degree over my 30 years.

Yes. [*Sigh*] I sit in on interviews, and the ranking person ALWAYS asks about "gaps", like that matters. "Yes. Twelve years ago my father suffered a stroke, and I took care of him for 22 months until he passed." It's always a legitimate life event.

My wife took off most of 2024 to care for her dying mom. She got absolutely grilled about it when applying to a job working the front desk at a hospital, despite being at her previous job for 9 years

I had a gap because I willingly took 4 months off just to get a break. A recruiter acted like my 10 years experience in my field was null and void cause of the gap and I’m going back to starting pay. So I just dropped the recruiter and edited out the gap and suddenly everything is fine.

My favorite way to explain a gap is something someone said from the LOTR. Gandalf explaining what happened after the balrog which goes smth like "I wandered out of time into places I won't willingly tell of...I laid upon the mountaintop. Stars wheeled over head but it was not the end." Just once I want to explain a gap that way. 😂

the mortgage industry is rotten with this. mass layoffs and then when they start hiring they want recent exp and no gaps. I have 25 years experience I'm not forgetting anything in 6 months. its insanely absurd

I took 7 months off in 2022. Interviewer: "can you explain this 7 month gap?" Me: "yeah, I saved up and just didn't feel like working. It was the best 7 months of my life." Interviewer: "that's awesome!"
