people would also cause a ton of false alarms by pulling or hitting the button on them. they didnt have buttons till early 2000. before that it was a pull handle.

those vintage red call boxes look cool, but growing up in Queens, some people saw them as a total curse for property owners. Homeowners had to keep an 18-inch radius around them perfectly spotless. Litter? Vandalism? The city didn’t care who did it, the person living behind it was responsible.
