@formerlovepoet: There’s a sundown town in California. Support work done by the London Nelson Legacy Initiative in that area. History is doomed to repeat itself if we’re not willing to learn from it. #formerlovepoet #bristerenglishproject #tangiblehistory #blackgenealogy #sundowntown
I feel like Santa Cruz is OK but the San Lorenzo Valley especially Boulder Creek, not so much

Young man I was born and raised in Santa Cruz County now I can say you are correct especially in the 1950s and 60s and now my proof is my personal own experience and I’m Black woman ,they say it’s not but you know the Devil is a lie😏😏

Santa Cruz has a club named,
Black Surf Santa Cruz (BSSC) is dedicated to creating intentional, inclusive, and supportive environments for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) within ocean and outdoor recreation spaces. I am sorry if this was your experience in SC. As a Indigenous woman living in Watsonville sadly there is still alot of racism but there are the hippies that really take care of us.

I grew up in Santa Cruz myself and my father always experienced mico aggressions and micro assaults in the school system and work place. Later in a Chicano studies class I learned about Mexicans being lynched on the San Lorenzo bridge. I have so much more examples of reasons. Thank you for validating this

Calling Santa Cruz a "sundown town" is a pretty serious historical claim, and I'd love to see the evidence because I've never found credible documentation showing Santa Cruz was officially or historically recognized as one.
Santa Cruz has a relatively small Black population, but that's very different from saying Black people aren't welcome here. We have an active NAACP chapter, annual MLK celebrations, one of the nation's first permanent Black Lives Matter street murals in front of City Hall, Black community leaders, Black-owned businesses, and we've had a Black District Attorney serving this county.
Is Santa Cruz perfect? Of course not. Racism has existed here just like it has across the country. But calling it a sundown town ignores the facts and the many people and organizations that have worked, and continue to work, to make this community more inclusive.
If you're going to label a city with a term that carries that much historical weight, there should be credible historical evidence to back it up, not just personal opinion.

I just moved to Santa Cruz and I’ve been wondering. There are no black people here?? (Besides at my job since we hire from all over the country) but I moved from omaha, NE and was very excited for more diversity but I have to go to San Francisco for that apparently 😞

London Nelson community center. A gift from him to the City of Santa Cruz. Formally known as Lauden Nelson. But the name was changed. Why.??

The Louden Nelson Center has been there forever and even though the past might not be but we want it to be. The center has provided wonderful art with community. SANTA CRUZ is very diverse. I was born and raised and my whole family. On June 17 all people celebrate and all people honor the celebration. and it always turns out to be a really great day for everybody. And Curtis is a well-known and a great guy to the community. I think that it’s just in your mind it felt out of place and I don’t and have never given or gotten that by the whole time I’ve ever live in SANTA CRUZ. But there is some dark history, like lots of places.
