Let’s clear the air 💨 How many times a day is it normal to fart? More than you probably think. A recent Australian study found that people passed gas an average of 4.8 times per day. Women averaged about 5.2 times per day, while men averaged slightly fewer. Most people in the study farted between 2 and 7 times a day. But passing gas up to 20–25 times a day can still be completely normal, especially if you eat a high-fiber diet. Why? Your gut bacteria ferment the fiber that reaches your colon. During that process, they produce gases along with beneficial compounds that help support your gut microbiome, digestive health, colon health, and overall gut health. In other words, eating more fiber often means more fermentation—and sometimes, more farts. The number of times you fart each day isn’t necessarily a sign of poor gut health. In fact, farting a little more after increasing fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, whole grains, chia seeds, or other fiber-rich foods can actually be a sign that your gut bacteria are doing exactly what they’re supposed to do. One of the questions I routinely ask patients in the hospital after abdominal surgery is, “Have you passed gas yet?” That’s because passing gas is one of the first signs that the intestines are waking up and normal bowel function is returning. Of course, if your gas is associated with severe abdominal pain, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent diarrhea, or other concerning symptoms, you should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. #fart #poop
