I had a teacher who used to have a rule in their class that if you said umm, ahh or like as a pause in a sentence, you wouldn't be allowed to finish your sentence he would just move on to the next student.

I get policed a lot as a visibly queer autistic Appalachian with a doctorate. For whatever reason that screams “try to make me feel dumb!” To people lol.

Just because you are thinking doesn’t mean you have to fill the void with a sound. You can just pause for a second…

The key to using filler words, is to diversify the crap out of them and avoid the most common ones (um, hmm, like). Though only avoid them because OTHER people are judgemental. It's not a reflection of you.
I love public speaking and I'm good at it. I had asked others ask me how I avoid filler words and I wasn't sure how... So I watched back a few of my talks. I realised I don't avoid them, I just use lots of different words, and phrases to give myself the 2 seconds I need to think. One of my favourites is to pose question even though I know damn well my audience can't answer. That pause they interpret is being for them but I'm actually doing it for myself 😂

remember chat: linguistics describe language, they do not create it. there are no rules to language, there is a social contract between you and the people you talk to understand that given words have a given meaning

This honestly makes more sense than saying that policing filler words is rooted in sexism
I see this as a Ted talk in the Idiocracy universe.

Great points! Completely agree with you - there are so many issues of racism, classism, sexism, queerphobia, etc. in relation to censoring speech in this way! Also is absolutely tied to ableism - I’m AuDHD and need to speak aloud to process. My auditory processing capacity is also a lot slower than neurotypicals. Was mercilessly bullied for my ums and ers as a kid, or for using sentence constructions or vocabulary that seemed “odd” to others. I received constant ridicule for needing context or to talk out ideas (in mutual conversation, mind you), or for needing people to repeat themselves because I literally couldn’t hear what they said properly. Was forced to do speech therapy as a young kid for almost four years. I’m in my mid twenties now, and I still interrupt myself to apologize because I am afraid I’m “speaking wrong” or “too much” and will be ridiculed or abandoned if I don’t shut up. It gets so bad I experience verbal shutdowns at least weekly from the shame (and accompanying anxiety) alone. I’m a writer and editor… words are literally my profession. It really is that serious.
