As a former HR director the "we're family here" should always be a red flag, they always end up being the most toxic workplaces that underpay and undervalue employees. Also unfortunately, hr is there to protect the company, not you. That's reason I don't do HR anymore.

My manager insisted I go to a funeral during a 1 hour lunch break, come back and finish the rest of my shift! It was someone who was basically the dad I didn't have! She also did this to another co-worker!

Had one manager used to change my schedule to being off while I was on the way to work. Also changed my schedule 9 times in a 30 minute period on my day off. They eventually retired and about a year later I resigned and took a job that contracted to my old company. They can try that crap all they want but I make my own decisions. Drives them nuts!
