It is shocking how many people don’t understand this scene at all. It’s not about the family right in front of them. Superman knows he could stop Zod from killing them in at least a dozen different ways. Whats actually happening is Superman is begging Zod to change. To abandon his ways of conquering and destroying. And when Zod tells him “never” he knows what he has to do. There is no prison to hold him, nobody else that can fight him, and no telling how many millions he could kill if this fight continues on. And so Superman makes the only choice he can, he chooses humanity. He deliberately kills the last thing in his life tying him to krypton. All throughout the film we are shown that there is no coexistence between krypton and earth, or anyone for that matter. To be kryptonian is to conquer. Their culture degraded so low that they only sought domination. In order for Superman to be Superman, he has to be Clark Kent. And for him to be Clark Kent, krypton has to die. It’s not about him killing Zod, it’s about him killing what Zod represents. It’s his choice to embrace his humanity and reject krypton entirely. It’s an incredibly beautiful story that shows how complex Superman actually is as a character. But instead, yall said it was “too edgy” and now superhero films are almost all unanimously slop. Things could have been different, but yall couldn’t see the vision.
