It’s been 11 months since the accident, and this part still surprises people… Due to the crush injury, the four toes on the same foot where my big toe was amputated still don’t bend. No real flex. No push. No normal. I’m still in physio twice a week for my foot, working through sensory retraining and trying to wake things up that just… haven’t come back yet. My second toe and the area where my toe used to be still go numb and white and feel frozen when it’s around 5°C. Like the signal just shuts off. I am still on the waitlist to be seen for Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). I still suffer from daily nerve and phantom pain, sometimes to excruciating levels of pain. What I didn’t expect is how much your toes matter until they don’t work. Without that push-off from any of my toes and especially without the big toe, even walking takes focus. Balance isn’t automatic anymore, it’s something I have to think about. The most frustrating part is that as much as this affects me constantly, it feels like nothing in comparison to my eyes and brain not working due to the misalignment and the concussion. But I’m still here. Still putting in the work. Still learning how to move forward, even if it looks different than before. One day at a time.
