Many consider this to be Leonardo DiCaprio’s finest acting performance. During the dinner sequence in 𝐃𝐣𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐨 𝐔𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝, DiCaprio accidentally crushed a glass with his hand, causing it to bleed for real. Rather than breaking character, he continued the scene, incorporating the injury into his performance. Quentin Tarantino was so impressed that he kept the take in the final film, and when he finally called cut, the set reportedly erupted in applause. Afterwards, DiCaprio even suggested smearing blood on Kerry Washington’s face to heighten the moment; Tarantino and Washington liked the idea, and fake blood was used to complete the shot.
Ironically, before filming the scene, DiCaprio had struggled with the foul language his character was required to use and considered stopping because he felt uncomfortable delivering so many slurs. According to Samuel L. Jackson, he pulled DiCaprio aside and told him, “Motherf**ker, this is just another Tuesday for us,” encouraging him to fully commit to the role.
The result is one of the most unforgettable scenes of DiCaprio’s career, portraying the monstrous Calvin J. Candie with such conviction that Tarantino has said Candie is the only character he has ever created whom he truly despises.
