In April 1723, the Leipzig council finally settled on their new director of music. He wasn't their first choice. Georg Philipp Telemann had already been offered the job and used it to negotiate a raise back home in Hamburg. Christoph Graupner was their second choice, but his employer refused to let him leave. One councilman reportedly summed up the mood in the room:

Georg Philipp Telemann had already been offered the job and used it to negotiate a raise back home in Hamburg. Christoph Graupner was their second choice, but his employer refused to let him leave. One councilman reportedly summed up the mood in the room: "Since we cannot get the best, then we will have to settle for average." Their "average" choice was Johann Sebastian Bach, 38 years old. Just weeks into the job, on July 2, 1723, Bach premiered a new cantata for the Feast of the Visitation — reworked from an unfinished piece he'd written years earlier in Weimar. He expanded it from six movements into ten, closing each half with the same flowing, joyful chorale. That chorale outlived everything else Bach wrote that week, that year, arguably that decade. Two centuries later, pianist Myra Hess arranged it for solo piano and gave it the title we know today: "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." It has since become one of the most played pieces of music at weddings, funerals, and everything in between — a piece of "average" work from a man hired as everyone's last resort. 💬 Did you know Bach was hired as the city's third choice?
