Lab-grown human skin on robot face? Researchers from the University of Tokyo built this smiling robot with lab-grown human skin cells. And for some people it might look pretty scary, because it’s in the so-called Uncanny Valley. This term was coined by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori in an 1970 essay. Mori suggested that our affinity with objects grows with their human likeness. Though only up to the point when things start to look kinda humanlike... but not enough to fool us into thinking they actually are human. Our affinity with them drops into the “Uncanny Valley” and we feel creeped out by them. Humanoid robots are strong candidates for ranking pretty high on that scale – especially now, in their early stage of development. But putting human skin on robots might have its benefits, for example in research for more effective beauty products. And they can give robots self-healing skills, like the ones we have with our living human skin.
