for people who don’t know much about this, it’s essentially the military junta who controls the government institutions and major cities such as Yangon and Mandalay, versus countless ethnic armed militias (Myanmar is incredibly diverse, 135 ethnic groups), PDFs (People’s Defense Forces), and loose alliances. the NUG is the main counteroffensive and support a federalized system, but many ethnic militias want varying degrees of autonomy which clashes with the NUG’s overall goal, leading to an extremely messy web of counteroffensives rather than a centralized insurgency. some of these groups (such as Kachin Independence Army for example), have been fighting continuously against the junta since 1948, leaving Myanmar as the worlds messiest and longest running armed conflict globally. fascinating country, but will likely never fully resolve its issues.
