@chista_gh: First, disclaimer: this post is about physical / combat training NOT magical training or whatnot. Now, I know it's a bit hard to stretch your time-line to fit in a realistic training arc, so my best suggestion is for your character to have some prior experience and the training arc is more for polishing up existing skills than teaching them everything from scratch. 🩷 #writingadvice #writingtips #fantasywriter #writertok #BookTok
I think insta training can be good if you do it right, like atla had katara become a master in like 3 episodes but we still saw her train throughout the show so it wasent horrible

i hate when in stories someone suddenly starts hardcore training (after having no training experience) and repeats it every day. They should be unable to train for the next few days because of muscle pain, and it should take them more time to complete their goals. But instead they go from 0 pull ups to 100 in a week or smth like that.

The part of seeing improvement then the next day feeling like you took a step back is so real 😭
I would add that if you start training like 4h a day (or more) without prior conditioning the third day your performance will be null and you'll hate your life.

My training chapter starts with a month of just stairs and push-ups while the supporting character does his own workout. I think the whole training period I have planned is about 2 years from blue collar to competent operator.

I love training plot. I'm writing a trainer for my MC that is a pain in her ass (she's also a pain in his ass most of the time but they make it work)

As a kickboxer and a writer, THANK YOU! I got to a point where I was questioning my own ability because of fiction, when in reality, I'm working harder if I look like I just got dragged through a thorn bush by my feet after training

Thanks, although my MC is engineered as a prodigy child I will be taking some of these into consideration since although the plot of book one is set in stone the book itself length and all that is NOT finished.

I have a story where my character hates their mentor and takes a year just to get used to training, still pissed off and tired after their mentor nitpicks their mistakes and acts like a huge eggplant before getting called out about it later.

my OC has a sort of kick boxing style (mainly because I used to do kickboxing training and understand the grueling labor) but despite having muscle aches he still does low intensity trainings (as one should do if they want to continue to work out the next day after an intense training session) of course it's still painful, but it hurts a lot less than constant intense training.

that's very true, from a fellow martial arts girlie! I'd also mention the canon event of the teacher saying "do it like this" and you think you already are doing it like that (you're probably not but oh well 😭)

i nearly feels like stop learning martial arts but the longer i practice i feel more useful and fun it get, as an author of a story, an experience like this is very valuable to implement to my own character, it surely will make the story and the charactdler itself feels more alive

Omg as a writer this helps me so much! There will definitely be fighting and training in my book but I always struggle soo much because I haven’t experienced any of it first hand so I never know how to write it realistically, this will help so much🥹
