@kowalamedia: The Vanishing (1988) begins with something terrifyingly ordinary. A man and his girlfriend stop at a roadside gas station. She goes inside and never comes back. What begins as a missing-person mystery becomes an obsessive search for answers. But George Sluizer’s film is less interested in hiding the truth than in exploring something far more disturbing: curiosity, obsession, and the human need for closure. The film builds its tension through silence and patience, revealing just enough to make every scene more unsettling than the last. There are no monsters, no gore, and no cheap shocks. The horror comes from the possibility that an ordinary moment can become a nightmare, and from the question of how far someone might go simply to know the truth. Stanley Kubrick reportedly called The Vanishing the scariest film he had ever seen. According to Sluizer, Kubrick watched it around ten times and personally called him to praise its editing and unforgettable ending. Some mysteries haunt us because we never get the answer. The Vanishing asks whether knowing could be worse. #TheVanishing #Spoorloos #StanleyKubrick #GeorgeSluizer #PsychologicalThriller

And of course the Hollywood remake sucked, as they usually do. The only remake of an original Foreign film that was any good was the Magnificent Seven, the remake of Seven Samurai.

I wonder if this inspired that movie Three Billboards. It also explores obsession and closure.
