Taking off from a standard runway in New Zealand, the Aurora hit the mark in a staggering 118.6 seconds, beating the 1975 record set by the highly-modified F-15 "Streak Eagle" by 4.2 seconds. Unlike traditional jets that rely on oxygen from the atmosphere, the Aurora uses a high-thrust-to-weight rocket engine, allowing it to maintain a near-vertical 85-degree climb while accelerating past Mach 1.1. This "missile with landing gear" design allows it to reach altitudes twice as high as commercial airliners in less time than it takes to boil an egg. ​The achievement marks the first time a civilian aircraft has flown supersonic since the Concorde, but the Aurora’s ambitions go much higher. This flight was a "risk retirement" test for its ultimate goal: becoming the first vehicle to fly to the Kármán line (100 km)—the edge of space—twice in a single day. By combining the reusability of a plane with the raw power of a rocket, Dawn Aerospace is creating a new class of "spaceplanes" that can launch satellites or conduct atmospheric research for a fraction of the cost of traditional vertical rockets.
