William Nyuon Bany Machar وليم نيوان بينج مشار He was born in Greater Fangak, Jonglei State, in 1930. William Nyuon was a South Sudanese military officer, liberator, and politician. He was a major in the Sudanese Armed Forces when he rebelled in Ayot, Jonglei State, in May 1983. He founded the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army with his other four comrades, and he became the third man in the movement. He was assigned the role of Chief of Staff of the SPLA in 1983. He led many successful battles against the Sudanese Armed Forces in the Upper Nile region and Equatoria region. When Kerubino Kuanyin Bol was arrested in 1987, Nyuon became the second man in the SPLA Movement led by Dr. John Garang until 1992. He led the SPLM delegation to the peace talks with the Sudanese government in Abuja, Nigeria, in 1991 and 1992. In September 1992, he announced his defection from the SPLA in Pageri, Equatoria region, following disagreements between him and Garang. In 1994, Nyuon founded the SPLA-United with Commander Dr. Riek Machar and Commander Kerubino Kuanyin Bol. Nyuon Bany became the third man in the new movement after Riek Machar and Kerubino Kuanyin. In March 1995, Nyuon was expelled from the SPLM-United after he was accused of establishing contacts with the Khartoum government. In April 1995, he returned to the SPLM led by Garang and apologized for his defection, and he thanked Commander Salva Kiir for stepping down and allowing him to be a deputy of the SPLA. William Nyuon Bany fought bravely against the enemy after rejoining the SPLA of Garang. According to the National Courier, Commander Nyuon Bany was killed by Riek Machar's forces on January 13, 1996, in an action at Gul. He was a great leader, liberator, and the hero of the nation.
