We rush through gray road gorges of concrete and asphalt, breathe filtered air in air-conditioned offices and stare for hours at artificially glowing screens. But deep inside us we feel a permanent, quiet restlessness. This is not a coincidence, but the evolutionary protest of our own body: Man does not belong in the city – we belong in nature. For millions of years, evolution has perfectly adapted us to a life in harmony with the earth. Our heartbeat, our hormonal system and our senses are programmed for the sound of the leaves, the smell of moist earth and the change of day and night. In recent centuries, however, we have locked ourselves in a huge, artificial experiment: the modern city. This urban space is an overload of stimuli for our nervous system. The constant noise of traffic, the unnatural blue light of the street lamps and the tightness between millions of strangers put our bodies in a permanent, subliminal state of alarm. Chronic stress, sleep disorders and mental illness such as depression are often the direct receipts for this alienation. Nature is not a place we should visit at the weekend just to relax - it is our biological home. When we walk barefoot across a meadow, our blood pressure drops almost instantly. The scent of trees has been proven to strengthen our immune system, and the view of the countryside allows our thoughts to come to rest. In nature, the artificially created problems of modern everyday life shrink, and we find our way back to what really matters: deceleration, real presence and deep satisfaction. We tried to shut out nature and build our own world. But we can't reinvent our own biology.
