I got retrenched recently, my employer combined my severance pay with both notice pay and leave days and added 36% tax directive. They paid as a lumpsum and did not separate the amounts! Perhaps they thought I was mot aware of the correct procedure. I informed them thy should have used different tax directive and they claimed due to the issue of efiling they couldn't obtain IRP3(a) after I enquire! I don't believe them. SARS uses different tax components for such. I qualify for a tax free retrenchment threshhold of R550 000 because the severance package is lower than that! Leave days and notice pay should be taxed with PAYE since its constitute as a remuneration. They claim they will fix it on their next payroll. I have also requested an IRP5. What should I do to make certain this get fixed?
