Today, even preparing a simple pot of jollof rice is expensive. After buying rice, just onions, pepper, tomatoes, seasoning, oil, and other ingredients can cost several thousand naira. Have we ever interviewed these officers after they are arrested to ask what pushed them into corruption? That does not excuse their actions, but if we truly want to solve the problem, we must also address the conditions that create it. Imagine if the Federal Government paid security personnel a living wage of about ₦500,000 monthly, provided food supplies such as rice, cooking oil, spaghetti, noodles, and other essentials every few months, and rewarded outstanding service with meaningful annual bonuses. Do you honestly think many of them would still risk their careers and freedom over small bribes? Corruption must be punished, but poor welfare must also be addressed. A hungry and frustrated security officer cannot be expected to perform at his best.
