ppl confused on your explanations, in summary it meant you were smart to open car door on the side where the brush/ plants are so that the car door can rub against this brushes to create friction to enable car to slow down to a stop. right. perhaps best next time, press the hazard light ON, locate the " hand brake " if possible. problem is most new car hand brakes are " A electric flip button ", maybe hard to locate. Newer car , you can press " engine stop" button also on the left side of handwheel.

Next time don’t forcefully open the door. When the car goes into a flip and turn situation. The airbags will not be able to save you guys then. Best is just pray and body hug your kids to protect them from any head injuries
