Legend has it that some of these giants can sense the vibrations of engines and propellers. Curiosity compels them to open an eye or raise part of their massive bodies toward the surface to observe how the world has changed since they last awoke. From the ships—tiny by comparison—one can barely make out an impossible shadow beneath the water. When a colossal head breaks the surface for a brief moment, many believe they have seen a moving island or a mountain rising from the ocean. Before anyone can grasp what has happened, the titan slowly submerges again and resumes its eternal sleep, leaving behind turbulent waters and a tale that few dare to tell.
