“Rome was defeated by time, not by armies” //Roman empire edit // #romanempire #disciplin #historyedit #italy #fy The Roman army is widely regarded as one of the most disciplined military forces of the ancient world. That reputation came from training, organization, and strict enforcement of rules—not because Roman soldiers never lost battles. Some examples of their discipline: * Constant training: Legionaries drilled year-round, even in peacetime. They practiced marching, formation changes, swordsmanship, and camp construction until these became routine. * Daily marches: A legion could march around 20–30 km (12–19 miles) in a day while carrying roughly 30–45 kg (65–100 lb) of equipment. * Fortified camps: At the end of nearly every day’s march, soldiers dug ditches and built a fortified camp, even in hostile territory. * Strict chain of command: Orders were expected to be followed immediately. Cohesion was considered more important than individual heroics. * Harsh discipline: Punishments ranged from flogging and reduction in rations to execution for severe offenses. In rare cases, commanders used decimation, where one in every ten men of a unit was executed to punish mutiny or cowardice. * Battlefield cohesion: Roman units trained to maintain formation under pressure, rotate tired soldiers, and fight as a coordinated body rather than as individuals.
