Just weeks after turning 31, Aya Nakamura, the most-streamed francophone woman in history, closed a chapter that only she could have written: one that began with bedroom recordings posted to Facebook and crescendoed at the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony. The French-Malian artist’s fifth studio album, Destinée, is a celebration of duality and Afro-diasporic rhythm: a body of work as layered and luminous as the woman herself. Performing her discography in a culture-defining concert in May, she stands at the pinnacle of French music: “I feel that filling it up is a consecration of everything I’ve done in the past — the songs, the awards. It’s a moment of recognition in my career and of loyalty from my audience”. Nakamura’s ascent has not been without resistance. She has faced scrutiny, racism and relentless noise - much of it directed at the very things that make her extraordinary: her language, her image, her refusal to be anything other than herself. And yet, she speaks to Glass with the quiet authority of a woman who has long since stopped seeking permission. Because perhaps that is the most Aya Nakamura thing of all: she never needed it.
