As someone who wasn’t born in Canada but grew up in Canada, I used to question whether it was my lack of intelligence as to why I didn’t do well in school, or if it was teacher biases and prejudices that led to neglect. I have taught myself many things over the years, and even gone back to concepts I had trouble with in high school and found that I didn’t actually have a learning disability.

I experienced so often growing up. I became a counsellor to help other autistic people. As an autistic counsellor - I did something I called aligning perspectives. One of the processes I created would be where I would give examples of how I was interpreting their experiences based on my own experiences or knowledge - I would call them stepping stones - and then they would say yes, no or sort of. And we would work together to create a defined understanding of experiences. I realized early on that definitions of words and experiences rarely were defined the same by two people. And when people were triggered - their definitions changed again. I learned and they learned in every session, because our joint experiences informed eachother. Thank you for this recommendation. I will definitely pick up this book!

My experience is with the NHS where I was not believed to have a chronic illness, Ehlers Danlos, it took me 49 years to get a diagnosis, another few years to start to get pain management treatment, longer to get doctors to understand that there are complications because of EDS. So once I woke during surgery, once I didn’t wake up. I spent 4 weeks in hospital for a gallbladder infection which the NHS didn’t diagnose as the symptoms are different for people who have EDS. I almost died. Then I wasn’t diagnosed for another infection which left me in hospital for 3 weeks. It took me 5 years to be able to see a neurosurgeon and as a result I now need complex surgery. That affected my pregnancies, loosing 4 children. I lost my job. I missed funding opportunities for my startup. I was and still am insulted for claiming PIP. My PIP interview took 5 hours and left me bedridden for 2 weeks. Etc… what did I do? It’s a genetic condition. Might as well euthanise me but i can’t see how people like can survive this. I am. Er
