I had a therapist who refused to hug (her boundary, totally fine) but some days all I needed was a dang hug 😭

Am I allowed to ask my therapist for a hug?

Hugging is not weird if client is comfortable with that. A lot of clients are scared to ask for a hug bc they think it’s weird, and therapists can play here a good role in telling them that hugs are not weird

Is there ever a time or situation where you tell the patient they have it figured out (broad term) and don’t really need more sessions or do you let them continue?

I would give ANYTHING to hug my therapist. If we weren’t completely virtual, I would like to think she would hug me.

Always let your mom hug you. I’d die to have mine back to hug me 🥺

With everything you both go through in a session a hug will finish it nicely.

My therapist ‘fired’ me because I didn’t need him anymore lol, it took me a little bit to actually agree with him. I think he was just tired of writing WTF in his notebook while I was talking 😂

I don’t think that hugging is weird, but when I was your daughter’s age, I probably would have thought it was “weird” or uncomfortable in the context of this conversation. But I think that’s more of a personal boundary and personal comfort level concept that has evolved for me overtime. To me now, it’s a form of reassurance for the people that need it. I work in pediatrics so I get probably 1 million hugs a day. 🤣

Hug creates a safe feeling and nothing wrong with showing innocent affection towards someone experiencing pain. It’s normal. And as she said she reads the room. Doesn’t hug them all. It’s usually quite easy to gage who would be receptive to a hug and who may not.

Can you ask questions on how to find the best therapist? Healthcare in this country is so bad and I’ve had such a hard time finding a therapist that fits my needs.
