What an amazing look at how Kentucky Street in McKinney changed in the early 1900s! Both images have been restored and colorized. The older view shows the original Masonic Temple beside the building that housed a business college and an Elks hall. Both buildings burned down in 1912, and the Masons rebuilt that same year. That explains why today’s Masonic building, now home to Harvest at the Masonic, looks different from the original. The later image, with the interurban in the street, shows the rebuilt Masonic building—the tallest building on the right, second from the end—and the Pope Theatre immediately to its right. Built within a few years of the 1912 fire, the Pope was a beautiful building. Sadly, it suffered an interior fire in the 1960s, and the city eventually bulldozed it. Today, only a parking lot occupies that space—the spot where the main stage for Texas Music Revolution stands each year. The interurban ran down Kentucky Street, parallel to Tennessee Street. Tennessee was the main road through McKinney, and when U.S. Highway 75 was later established, Tennessee became part of its route. Highway traffic went right through the square! Two views of the same street, with so much history between them. Next time you’re downtown, take a moment to imagine the buildings, streetcars, and everyday life that once filled this scene.
