The man on trial for Tupac Shakur's fatal shooting suggested to FBI agents in 1998 that Compton police officers may have conspired with Marion
The man on trial for Tupac Shakur's fatal shooting suggested to FBI agents in 1998 that Compton police officers may have conspired with Marion "Suge" Knight to murder the rapper because he wanted to leave Death Row Records. Jurors on Thursday (August 20, day 4) heard a 2 1/2 hour interview Davis gave Los Angeles police detectives in 2008 in which he told them he was in the car when Shakur was shot and described handing the gun to Deandre Smith, who passed it off to Davis' nephew Orlando Anderson, who'd been attacked by Shakur earlier that night and, according to Davis, fired the fatal shots. But before they heard that interview, jurors heard from Wade Lee, a retired FBI agent who testified about speaking with Davis in 1998 for a "proffer" after he'd been indicted on federal cocaine charges. The interview was not recorded; agents instead wrote detailed notes. Marc DiGiacomo, the chief deputy district attorney in Clark County, Nevada, displayed them for jurors on Wednesday as he questioned Lee. Davis "said they didn't they didn't have any knowledge of what happened" with Tupac and "they weren't involved," Lee summarized Davis as saying. "He did later speculate that maybe it was some Compton police officers that were working for Suge Knight and that maybe it was because he had heard that Tupac was talking about possibly leaving Death Row Records or something of that effect," Lee said. "His suggestion was that perhaps Knight, who's driving the car, had Compton police officers shoot Tupac in the car Suge's driving?" DiGiacomo asked incredulously. "Yes, something to that effect," Lee answered. Davis said he knew much more about the 1997 murder of Christopher "The Notorious BIG" Wallace in Los Angeles. "He tells you that he was actually at the Peterson Automotive Museum the night Mr. Wallace was killed?" DiGiacomo asked. "That's correct. Yes," Lee answered. Davis said he saw women associated with Death Row at the party, including comedian LaShelle Sanders and singer Jewell Caples and "believes that he saw that they saw Mr. Wallace at the event." Ten or 11 Blood gang members arrived, and "Davis told Mr. Wallace ... that they were there and they should watch out, and then shortly thereafter, Mr. Wallace was shot," Lee summarized. "Davis wasn't there; he didn't see who actually shot him." "But once again, he tells you that he believes that Reggie Wright Jr. and Blood gang members are the people that killed Mr. Wallace?" DiGiacomo asked. "Yes, he said he believed that Reggie Wright Jr. and the Blood gang members associated with with him were the ones responsible for killing Notorious BIG," Lee answered. "When asked who the individual was who actually killed him ... there was a composite drawing that was being that had been provided and was kind of passed around. So we showed him that. Davis responded that composite looked just like Reggie Wright Jr." Wright, a former Compton police officer, testified on Tuesday.
