In 1896, at the age of 74, a senior minister of China’s crumbling Qing dynasty - Li Hongzhang traveled to Europe and United States, hoping to find a way out for his imperiled empire. On August 28, he arrived in New York, the final stop of his journey. As he walked along the streets of New York, he was stunned by what he saw - automobiles everywhere, and skyscrapers dozens of stories high. This stark contrast filled him with despair, and he was recorded as saying: “Even with a hundred years, China could hardly catch up.” Historical accounts note that after his return, he remained silent for a long time, uttering not a word. In 1900, the Boxer Rebellion broke out, and the Eight-Nation Alliance captured Beijing. Empress Dowager Cixi fled in haste to Xi’an with Emperor Guangxu. In 1901, Li Hongzhang, on behalf of the Qing government, signed the Boxer Protocol with the eleven foreign powers. The treaty stipulated an indemnity of 450 million tales of silver and allowed foreign troops to be stationed in China. Upon returning from the signing, Li, utterly exhausted and broken, vomited a large mouthful of blood in public, and lamented: “With such a heavy treaty, how can I ever face my ancestors in the afterlife?” Then he passed away shortly thereafter. As a senior minister of the late Qing, Li Hongzhang gave his all in the face of a shattered and faltering empire. Yet in the end, he could not prevent its collapse. Soon after, surrounded by foreign powers, the Qing dynasty fell, and China entered a long, turbulent era of chaos and war. Chinese history now calls the “Century of Humiliation.” #china #History #qingdynasty #humiliation #contrast
