Well done. My wife and i met on OkCupid. She waved. The rest followed. I then went to visit her family for a day, ate together and she and I actually met in person for the first time. (We had video called including with parents and texted lots.) I then asked her father (and mother) for permission to date. Three weeks later I asked for permission to engage (Kagon). My wife and I are both very direct and intentional so we talked about each step a lot before. We married two months later. Who you marry is the most important decision you will make in life. There are good men and women out there. Make yourself be one and then find your one. A good book I recommend reading together when you think you have found ‘The One’: “101 Questions to Ask Before you Get Engaged”. Basically pre-marital counseling. My wife and I read this together as we got to know each other before we ever met in person. 😊 Make intentional love.

That’s not arranged marriage technically. That’s just being wise and selective about who marries your child. Arranged marriages the child has no choice.

Okay —-but then you only see them on their best behavior with their family around. You need to see how he treats restaurant staff and how he can be genuinely thoughtful on a date and considerate of your interests. Also you’re left wondering is he respecting your boundaries because his family is nearby or is he respecting your boundaries because he knows he should. It also removes a significant amount of choice from your hands. What your parents want might not be what you want in a partner

I don’t mind this except for the dad’s permission part. My mom I could see because she grew me. But letting a man, even my dad, control my body/life is a huge no for me. Marriage and childbirth should be the provenance of the older women in the community. And for people with abusive parents this would be a nightmare.

I had a guy his family was like this but my mom was abusive and locked me up even more i didn’t know what was happening at the time until he moved. But that experience helped me with my kids today and is exactly how I’d want my kids to feel confident to date properly within age rages.
