I always took it as "Hey, you should try to reduce the amount of things you consume, but don't feel horrible if you end up having to buy something if you really need it."

I have completely changed how I consume because of this phrase. I don't even buy groceries from corporate conglomerates. I do acknowledge that many people don't have this privilege. I buy pet food from my local agriculture co-op, produce from family owned and mostly locally sourced produce market and other groceries from another smaller chain that is employee owned. As for clothing, I thrift and sew.

I use this phrase to remind me that it is okay to buy things that I NEED (from the most ethical source) without having a panic attack about how I’m lining the pockets of billionaires. I’ve heard other people use it justify a Temu order. It infuriates me

It's also important as a response to "purity testing" the "you have a phone and yet you talk about sustainability, don't you know that phones are bad" yes, but to exist in the modern world you need a phone, "there is no ethical consumption" so choose the least bad one, keep it for as long as possible, but having something "bad" isn't proof of being a hypocrite, it's proof of being forced to exist in system that requires some consumption for you to live
