Don’t feel bad. My husband and make 300k a year and still struggle financially at times. We are both independent contractors so I can break it down: if you make 300k in Nevada you walk away with 211 after taxes. Thats about 17k a month. First thing is 401k which we max out our 401k so 4000 goes to that. Second is health insurance (since we are independent we have a marketplace plan which is 1700 a month) that leaves us with 11k then we have our mortgage which is 3k leaving us with 8k for the month. Our bills in Nevada are about 1500 a month in summer and 1000 in winter so that’s variable but brings it down to 7k. Then we have 4000 in childcare expenses (3 kids) so that’s variable becomes 3k remaining. Food is like 1000 sometimes less so that’s down to 2k. We have no car payments or other debt but 2k is what is left for “extra” not including putting something in savings. You aren’t doing anything wrong, times are tough financially and things are expensive. Nothing in my life is extravagant or out of control.
