@rachelledurranthostmom: Replying to @julsy.24seven One question I get asked a lot is whether I have clothing rules for exchange students. The answer is pretty simple: wear what you're comfortable in and cover the important bits. For me, hosting an exchange student is about helping them feel welcome, comfortable, and able to be themselves while learning to navigate life in a new culture. What clothing rules, if any, did your host family have during your exchange year?
I just really love what you stand for. You’ve really opened my eyes a lot.

I think I have figured this out... Your rules are all based on common sense 💕

do you think it would be a good experience for me to host a student by myself? I'm 40 with no kids and my own home!

My host mum created the rule of “please wear at least socks outside in winter”. In my defence their winter was my summer weather at home

this may have been asked before but have you ever had an experience where your exchange student and children did not get along ?

I honestly love the way you host, my sister had a not so good experience with her host family, it’s refreshing to see someone who isn’t judgemental

Same for our house, our high school doesn’t have a dress code either. We’ve only had to talk to one student about one of their outfits. It wasn’t a regular thing just a specific top they purchased for an event.

That sounds like good rules! I've started to sound like my parents cause I can hear myself go "It's COLD outside, and I mean COLD, please wear something warmer" 😂 or "Did you bring gloves? A hat? An extra sweater?" as soon as we go out the door cause I'm always so stressed they'll be freezing. Then I realize I sound like my own parents (in my defence, it can get down to -25F and most of our students definitely aren't used to that) 🤷♀️

How was exchange during Covid? Did they cancel the coming semester? Did the students that were already in their exchange go home or just also do online education? Or maybe your town did something different and didn’t have online school? :D

Dress weather appropriate. My southern Italian girl was big mad in December when it was -17 and I dropped her off at school. “Why does nobody wear a coat? Why is that cool!?!?” Before that day, the lowest temp she’d ever experienced was around 32. 😅

We say bits covered, if a character is on your clothes— their bits must be covered, and your clothes can’t be blatantly insulting. (Like bad swear words, or illegal substances)

I remember my host mom making me go change a few times because my clothes violated the dress code. It always surprised me a little because I never wore anything revealing. Rural Texas was definitely very conservative 😅 My school in Germany didn't even have a dress code.
