Looking for patterns in answer letters (A, B, C, D sequences) does not work reliably. Test writers (and computerized scoring systems) do not create exams with intentional letter patterns that students can exploit. Answer keys are usually randomized or balanced so that no letter appears significantly more often than others across the whole test. Any short streak you notice (three C’s in a row, alternating A-B-A-B, etc.) is almost always random chance. Why the “pattern” approach fails Modern exams (especially standardized ones) deliberately avoid long runs of the same letter or obvious sequences. Even when a short run appears, the next correct answer is still independent of the previous ones. Relying on a perceived pattern often causes you to override what you actually know or what process-of-elimination suggests — which lowers your score more often than it raises it. Statistical analyses of real exams show no predictive power in letter sequences once content knowledge is accounted for. What actually helps instead Stick to content-based strategies: Eliminate clearly wrong options. Match the language and concepts from the course.
