Some kinds of longing are hard to explain. Sometimes you miss a person. Sometimes you miss a place. Sometimes you miss a feeling you cannot return to. And sometimes, the heart feels far from something it loves, even when it cannot fully put that distance into words. “My soul… longing, and the road is far…” There is something painfully human in that line. It sounds like a heart that has been waiting too long. A soul tired from distance. A person trying to stay patient through a night that feels like it will not end. But this longing is not only personal. It reminds us of Hasan ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, the son of Ali and Fatima, whose life carried patience through betrayal, loneliness, and grief. He came from the purest household, yet saw love claimed by tongues and abandoned by actions. And still, Hasan remained noble. Still, he remained gentle. Still, he chose patience when bitterness would have been easier. Maybe that is why this poem feels so heavy. Because longing is not always just for a person or a place. Sometimes it is longing for justice. Longing for purity. Longing for the family of the Prophet ﷺ to be remembered with the love, loyalty, and honour they deserve. Hasan ibn Ali teaches us that patience is not weakness. Silence is not surrender. Forgiveness is not forgetfulness. Sometimes the strongest heart is the one that breaks quietly, yet still chooses mercy, dignity, and Allah. May Allah fill our hearts with love for Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and allow us to remember Hasan with tears, loyalty, and character. #islam #poetry #History
