@fosterparenting: Did some unscripted responses and figured I’d share them here too! Feel free to add to the comments how you talk to your kids about an incarcerated parent. #fosterparent #fostercare #fosterparenting
Sesame Street has a great resource for kids with incarcerated parents. There are also great books available.

We tell our 4yo foster child that it’s grownup timeout for breaking big rules like safety rules than the therapist engages them in more

Love this approach! I would just add that sometimes the question they ask isn’t really what they want to know. The kid may just be trying to understand the entire situation but doesn’t know how to ask “does my mom still think about me” “am I in danger” “is she ever coming back” etc. Exploring what they’re feeling about the situation (gently and without pressure) can help soothe them even if you don’t have the exact information the question is asking.

I just wanted to say that, although I am not a foster parent, I am a biological guardian/custodian/caregiver of a young child who has not had any contact with biological mother (her choice) for several years. Child has absolutely no memory of bio mom as child was 6 months old (and is now 8 years old!) the last time bio mom had any contact (again, her choice). Your content has really helped me in answering difficult questions and managing difficult situations with child. So a big THANK YOU 🥰

This was made unscripted! So there’s more to add to this nuanced situation. Feel free to chime in in the comments

I understand all that and I have no doubt it’s the best way possible, since you have already thought of them all… It’s just… things put like that don’t sound honest at all, and it brought to light the part of me that is still a child yearning for true connection and not having it despite - as I now understand - the best effort of grown ups. It felt so lonely(

I have my niece coming to me through kinship soon after a year and a half of being in the same foster home, how can I help support the continuation of that relationship, I know how much they both love each other and I never want to come between that relationship

I could never work with children this is all so much deeper than I could’ve imagined, I had no idea kids were this in-tune with what’s going on 🤯

I wish I had this sort of support as a kid instead of finding out on my own, things could have been very different. This means so much to me

we made the analogy of jail being "big people timeout". when you are little you go to timeout. when you are a grown-up you have to go live in a grown-up timeout. my son's dad took things that didn't belong to him.

Have you encountered social workers that are not professional or don’t provide age-appropriate explanations? How do you deal with that?

I think that sometimes why = when will they return or why = could it happen to me (because I don’t understand how something like jail works).

Was at a conference once hearing from seasoned social worker who said “if the parent is a rat… The child might think they are a rat too” heartbreaking. How can that be handled??? kids endure so much🙁

Someone I know had a child that was told the reason they were in care is because their dad was in prison, she was asking why she couldn’t go home to mam if he was in prison, it’s not like he lived there anymore. We wernt allowed to tell her she couldn’t go home because mam refused to put in the effort required to get them home

It also probably depends on developmental stage of the child, even if they’re older. A child may be older, but may be on the autism spectrum or some development disorder that may affect how they understand information.
