Today I'd like to speak directly to employment agencies. This is not about judging anyone or attacking anyone. It is about raising professional standards in our industry. As organisations working with domestic workers and employers, we carry a responsibility that goes beyond simply filling vacancies. South African labour law does not permit employment agencies to charge work seekers for finding them employment. That is an important principle designed to protect vulnerable job seekers. But my message goes even further. If you are placing domestic workers with employers, please don't stop at making the placement. Help ensure that the employment relationship starts on the right foundation. Ask whether there is a written employment contract. Encourage employers to comply with labour legislation. Make sure workers understand their rights and responsibilities. Promote UIF and COIDA registration where applicable. Encourage fair treatment, lawful working conditions, and respectful workplaces. We should never tell a domestic worker to simply endure unfair treatment because jobs are scarce. We should be promoting solutions, compliance, and better employment relationships. At Batho Baka, our focus is not only on connecting employers and workers. Our focus is on promoting dignity, respect, compliance, and safe, fair workplaces for everyone. When employers are supported to comply and workers are treated fairly, everybody wins.#BathoBaka #HouseOfOluK #DomesticWorkers #DomesticEmployers #LabourCompliance
