Albert came looking for us again today. That giant camel head slowly appeared through the porch doorway like he owned the place, which, honestly, he probably thinks he does. The problem was that our porch is packed with the strange collection of ranch life: boots, buckets, ropes, jackets, tools, old chairs, animal feed, things waiting to be fixed, and things that probably should have been thrown away years ago. Once Albert squeezed himself in there, he realized there was absolutely no way to turn around. You could see him stop and think about it. For a moment he looked almost nervous, staring at the maze around him, trying to figure out how a thousand-pound camel was going to get himself out without knocking over half the ranch. Then he gave us this look that basically said, “I really don’t understand why you people think this is complicated. I have four legs. I have eyes. I walk backwards all the time.” And somehow, inch by inch, he started backing out with the care of a ballet dancer wearing cowboy boots. What amazes me about Albert is not that he’s huge, or famous, or funny. It’s how gentle he is. He moved backwards through all that clutter without touching a single thing. No panic. No crashing. Just slow, thoughtful little steps while all of us stood there holding our breath like nervous parents watching a toddler near a swimming pool. Then the second he cleared the doorway, he calmly turned around like nothing had happened and headed straight toward the kitchen because apparently surviving impossible situations should always be rewarded with apples. And maybe that’s why we love him so much. Life out here is messy and imperfect and crowded with things collected over decades of memories, projects, animals, and people we love. Somehow Albert fits into all of it perfectly. He doesn’t fight the chaos of ranch life. He just moves through it carefully, kindly, and with complete trust that there’s always a way forward, or backward, if you need it. Watching him disappear toward the kitchen tonight felt strangely emotional, like watching an old friend who knows he’s home. #ranchograndeojai #peace #Love #family
