I get where you're coming from. From what’s recorded in the seerah and hadith, the Prophet ﷺ didn’t publicly name one specific person as his successor. If he had, the companions would have followed that directly without any discussion. What he did leave us was the principle of shura - mutual consultation. That’s why right after he passed away, the companions gathered at Saqeefat Bani Sa’idah and consulted each other. They looked at who was most trusted, most knowledgeable, and most able to lead the ummah. That’s how Abu Bakr was chosen: through shura and then bay’ah, the pledge of allegiance from the people. I think it is better to consult someone more knowledgeable in history at that time than the religion itself.
