Pastor Convicted of Running £1.5M Gift Aid Fraud Across Ten Churches_Full-HD. On 2 December 2024, Moses Asare — a 57-year-old head pastor of Praise Harvest Community Church in London — was convicted at Snaresbrook Crown Court and sentenced to seven years' imprisonment after being found guilty of five counts of cheating the public revenue, three counts of furnishing false information, and one count of money laundering arising from a £1.5 million Gift Aid fraud carried out across ten evangelical churches in north and east London. Working alongside former charity accountant Kwabena Duodu, who received ten years and spent part of his proceeds on a £550,000 home, Asare leveraged his pastoral standing to persuade fellow congregations to allow him to submit Gift Aid claims on their behalf, a scheme that exploits HMRC's trust-based system allowing charities to reclaim 25 pence for every pound donated. The HMRC Fraud Investigation Service unpicked the false claims and traced approximately £320,000 funnelled directly into Asare's hands, money he then deployed as a loan-sharking operation, lending to members of his own congregation at an interest rate of approximately 120 per cent. A third defendant, John Quansah of Heaven Light Ministry International, was convicted of furnishing false information and received a suspended sentence following the ten-week trial. Among those charged interest by Asare were worshippers who had themselves contributed to the donations used to fund the scheme — believers whose generosity was reclaimed by the state, stolen by a conspirator, and then lent back to them at rates that would have been illegal from any other lender.
